高校英語・関係代名詞
関係代名詞には、「who, whom, which, whose, that」があります。文の中で、これらの前には、名詞が置かれます。
例えば、
a boy who is running：走っている少年
the thing that I need：私が必要とすること
のように、後ろに続く文を、前の名詞につなげる（関係させる）働きをします。前に置かれる名詞のことを、先行詞といいます。
【whom】
★先行詞が「人」
This is the man whom I met yesterday.
こちらが昨日私が会った男性です
＝This is the man who I met yesterday.
＝This is the man that I met yesterday.
※「who」「that」への置き換え可
★省略できる
This is the man whom I met yesterday.
↓
This is the man I met yesterday.
【whose】
★先行詞の所有物を表す（～をもつ）
I have a friend whose name is Meg.
メグという名前の友達がいます（メグという名前をもつ友達）
I saw a dog whose legs were long.
長い脚の犬を見た（長い脚をもつ犬）
※「人」以外にも使う
上の各文を、２つに分けた場合
I have a friend whose name is Meg.
↓
I have a friend. Her name is meg.
I saw a dog whose legs were long.
↓
I saw a dog. Its legs were long.
代名詞の所有格を使う
★whoseの書き換え「of which」
I live in a house whose roof is blue.
↓
I live in a house the roof of which is blue.
私は屋根が青色の家に住んでいる
※of whichを使うと、先行詞の前にも名詞が来る（名詞が並ぶ）
※先行詞は「人以外」に限定
同じ意味の文
I live in a house which the roof is blue.
I live in a house with a blue roof.
【that】
★「that」限定
①先行詞が「人」と「人以外」
I saw a girl and a dog that were walking.
歩いている少女と犬を見た
②文中に疑問詞の「who」「which」がある
Who is the boy that is playing tennis?
テニスをしている少年は誰ですか
Which is the bike that you want to buy?
あなたが買いたい自転車はどれですか
③先行詞に特定できる形容詞がつく
最上級、first（序数）、only、very
This is the tallest mountain that I have seen.
これは、私が見た中で最も高い山だ
【前置詞 + 関係代名詞】
★「in which」
This is the house which they live in.

This is the house in which they live.
これは彼らが住んでいる家だ
★「to which」
That is the place which we went to.
↓
That is the place to which we went.
あれは、私達が行った場所だ
★「on which」
That is the bus which we got on.
↓
That is the bus on which we got.
あれは、私達が乗ったバスだ
※「in that」「to that」「on that」不可
【非制限用法】
★「，」カンマつきの関係代名詞
※継続用法とも言う
I have a brother, who loves baseball.
↑
I have a brother. And he loves baseball.
私には弟が一人いる。ちなみにその弟は野球が大好きだ。
※制限用法とのちがい
I have a brother who loves baseball.
私には野球が大好きな弟が一人いる
⇒野球好き以外の弟がいる可能性を含む
非制限用法では対象が絞られる
I bought a book, which is written in English.
↑
I bought a book. And it is written in English.
私は本を一冊買った。ちなみにそれは英語で書かれている。
※「, that」不可
【what】
★「こと・もの」と訳すwhat
I can’t believe what you are saying.
＝I can’t believe the thing which you are saying.
あなたの言っていることが信じられない
※what= 「the thing which~」「the thing that~」
What is important is to keep learning.
大切なことは学び続けることだ
This is what I bought yesterday.
これは私が昨日買ったものだ
★what + 主語 + be動詞
「今の・昔の・未来の～」
He is not what he was.
＝He is not what he used to be.
彼は（もはや）昔の彼ではない
